Identifying Pet Anxiety
Cats and dogs are very likely to have problems with anxiety. Visiting the vet, routine changes, loud noises (such as fireworks) or moving to a new home are all examples of things that can cause pet anxiety.
Many pets are naturally anxious but leaving your cat or dog at home alone for long stretches of time can cause them to have stress and become bored. Most pets need a lot of social contact. Pets can become loud and destructive when they are unhappy about being left at home alone. If your pet is experiencing separation anxiety then you are likely to come home to scratched doors, messes on the floor and torn up furniture. Also, if you are stressed out a lot your dog or cat will pick up on these feelings and become anxious themselves.
Noise is also a great source of anxiety for dogs and cats. Gunshots, fireworks, thunderstorms, the sweeper running and a drill are all things that might stress your pet out. It is easy to spot a pet that is dealing with noise anxiety because they will normally run away and hide in a spot that is far away from the noise. Sometimes they might even drool, tremble, bark, meow or urinate when loud noises occur.
Socializing your pet when it is young is very important because if you do not it can lead to social anxiety. Pets that are not properly socialized will have a strong fear of crowded places and have issues getting along with other animals. When a dog or cat is faced with a social situation they cannot handle they are likely to either flee or turn aggressive.
There are several anti-anxiety medications that your vet can prescribe for your dog or cat. They have a number of side effects including diarrhea, purging and negative changes in the blood pressure. There are also several natural remedies that can help to relax your pet without any side effects. Scullcap and Passiflora incarnata will both help to calm your dog or cat by soothing their nervous system. Kalium phosphate and Argentium nitricum are ingredients that can be found in many home remedies. They are both well known for their support of the nervous system and digestive system.
Make sure that you do whatever you can to help your dog or cat feel comfortable and give them the help that they deserve. After all, if you do not then who will? They sure cannot do it for themselves.
